As it has happened in many other cities, the river Thames has played an essential role in the beginning and growth of the city of London throughout history.
It was due to the river that Romans settled there where there had probably been ancient remains of primitive people. The river Thames was also the reason why Saxons and Vikings struggled and so on until nowadays. It was necessary for the different tribes and people to build bridges over the river Thames so as to make their economy grow.

The Thames is the longest river entirely in the kingdom of England. It flows not only through central London, but also through other towns and cities such as Oxford, Reading and Windsor.

At present times, although the port has been moved out to Tilbury, the river goes on being a key factor in the development of London. The liveliness of the quays has meant the largest urban transformation in Europe, with new buildings such as the Embankment Place or the most enormous dome in the world in Greenwich, in addition to the old buildings such as the Tower of London or the Houses of Parliament.
